For the last 26 years, and without missing a year, the Labrador Retriever maintains its number one position on the 2016 most popular dog breed in the United States.
Why is the Labrador Retriever the Most Popular Dog Breed in the US?
It only makes sense that the Lab tops the most popular dog list and breaks all records doing so because the Labrador is so eager to please, it is so intelligent and friendly, and the list goes on. This is a versatile, exceptional companion for almost any type of lifestyle a family may have. Also, let’s not forget just how beautiful the Lab is, too! They’re also pretty good at dog sports and make excellent service dogs, in addition to being heroes and saving a few lives. But, they don’t have a chip on their shoulder, they’re just being their loving, caring, affectionate, playful selves.

The 2016 most popular dogs in the United States list is only slightly different than the year before, with the same breeds remaining in the top 10 positions, but just slightly changing in the rankings. According to the American Kennel Club the list is as follows:
The German Shepherd is in second place, with the Golden Retriever a close third. The Bulldog, Beagle, and French Bulldog remain unchanged in the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions respectively. In seventh place, up one from the year prior is the Poodle, and following is the Rottweiler, which also climbed up one spot in popularity. The Yorkshire Terrier dropped two spots, coming in at number nine on the list, and the Boxer unchanged at number 10.

Not surprisingly, the Labrador Retriever is also the most popular dog breed in the UK for years. Unlike the U.S., second place went to the Cocker Spaniel, with the English Springer Spaniel in third and the German Shepherd in fifth. From sixth to 10th, respectively are the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the Border Terrier, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the Golden Retriever, the Pug, and finally, just like in the U.S., the Boxer holds no. 10.
