feed your dog table scraps

When your four-legged family member is begging for your food, you may be tempted to feed your dog table scraps. You might even think that it’s a good idea. But what you don’t know could hurt your dog.

Consider the fact that we as humans, consume a lot of high-fat foods that are both delicious and comforting. However, those are the worst foods you can give your pet. What you might consider an innocent leftover meal could gravely affect your dog’s health.

What Happens to Dogs That Eat Table Scraps?

Gastrointestinal Upset

Many dogs can’t handle new foods and have a difficult time digesting them properly. Avoid giving your dog anything new if you’ve ever noticed any digestive sensitivities.

A new food given to your dog can cause inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract — a result of a disruption of balance of the flora and gastrointestinal lining. This could result in your dog having any of the following issues:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach ache
  • Lethargy

Any of the above symptoms or signs that your dog needs to go to the veterinarian as soon as possible so that your dog can safely recover from the episode.

Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, generally caused by eating fatty foods. In dogs, pancreatitis can be fatal. High-fat foods are generally one of the main causes of acute pancreatitis. Look out for:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe abdominal pain

If you see signs of pancreatitis, because it can be fatal or at the very least, painful, so get your dog to the vet ASAP.

Bone Splinters

Giving your dog table scraps can also result in them getting bone splinters. These can be extremely dangerous because they can get caught virtually anywhere from the time they swallow to the time it is expelled from their bodies. Not only can this be fatal, but it can also require surgery to remove bones. So, be extra careful of bones if you insist on still feeding your dog table scraps.

Exposure To Toxins

Exposure to toxins is very possible when dogs are given table scraps because the foods may contain toxic ingredients. Dogs cannot eat all the foods that we can, and ingesting some of those could be fatal to them. For example, chocolate, grapes, raisins, and other foods are on the list of foods to never feed your dog.

The best thing that you can ever do if you feed your dog table scraps is to discuss the matter with your vet. Better safe than sorry for everyone involved.
