Types of Dog Grooming Brushes

The various types of grooming brushes available are for the different coats. A brush that’s ideal for a German Shepherd is not useful for a Schnauzer, for example. Moreover, the wrong brush will likely cause your dog discomfort and lead to him disliking grooming. In fact, the wrong brush could cause him pain. Alternatively, if there is no discomfort or pain, grooming sessions will be much more pleasurable for both of you. The four main types of dog grooming brushes are:

Pin Brushes. A pin brush looks much like the type of brush people use. They are typically oval in shape and have flexible wires  with pins loosely arranged. These are the most commonly used brushes but not always the most useful. They come in handy to remove and pick up any loose hair before it falls on the ground or gets on your furniture and is a fine brush to finish off a grooming session, helping to fluff up a well-brushed coat.

Slicker Brushes. A slicker brush is one that has a flat surface with closely fitted fine and short wires. These are the best dog grooming brushes for breeds with medium-to-long hair or curly-haired dog breeds. Slicker brushes help to remove mats and keep them from forming, when used on regularly. While there are many types available, choose from  those with a flexible handles, as it makes it easier to use. Also, they slicker brushes come in different sizes, so it’s important to choose the size according to the size of your dog.  Slicker brushes are ideal for Saint Bernards, Golden Retrievers, and Yorkshire Terriers, for example. However, whenever using these brushes, be gentle because the wires that are so tightly spaced can lead to pain or discomfort for your dog.

Rakes. A rake is a brush specifically designed to remove tangles and dead hair close to the dog’s skin. It’s perfect for dogs with thick coats, like Chow Chows, Huskies, or German Shepherds, and other breeds that have thick undercoats, for example. Appearance-wise, they resemble a shaving razor but with either one or two rows of pins that are tightly spaced. To use, only minimal pressure is required. With so many variations it can be challenging to find the right one for your dog. How? Choose a rake that matches the length of your dog’s hair. If it’s too long, it could end up irritating his skin, while one too short can defeat the purpose.

Bristle Brushes. A bristle brush is the ideal brush for any dog with a smooth or a short coat. Their job is to stimulate the skin while removing any loose hair, which will reduce the amount of shed hair in your home. These are perfect for Doberman Pinschers, Boston Terriers, Jack Russel Terriers, Pugs, and so on.

Don’t Forget Flea Combs

Flea Combs. Additionally, a flea comb is an essential buy. Fleas cause a great deal of irritation and may eventually lead to infections. All types of dog breeds benefit from flea combs and they are universal.

Remember, you get what you pay for! A dollar store buy won’t last you, but a quality dog grooming brush will deliver each and every day of your dog’s life.

Grooming supplies for dogs may seem very expensive when you get to the checkout, but if you do the math, one that will last for years will actually be cheaper than those flimsy ones you pick up at discount stores because they won’t need to be replaced.
